Bike, Walk, Clean – Dream!

Staying safe and socially distanced does not always mean staying indoors. On Saturday, August 15th, Canopy South and partners – Heartland Workers Center, Heartland B-Cycle, MAPA, and Keep Omaha Beautiful – hosted a neighborhood bike, walk, and clean-up event at Upland Park. Neighbors and community leaders supported the event through planning, promoting, and participating in event activities.

Event attendees enjoyed a ride through the neighborhood on e-bikes and were provided free helmets to take home. Riders took frequent breaks to discuss the bikeability, safety, and transportation needs of the neighborhood. After reconvening in the park, participants were asked to share their thoughts about what they loved about the park and what they would like to see improved. The most common feedback was related to improving park safety and overall beautification of the area.

“Social distancing circles” drawn in chalk paint on the grass, allowed for neighbors to enjoy a picnic style snack, while maintaining a safe distance between households. The event concluded with a clean-up effort that resulted in many large bags of litter removed from the park.
