Block Talk Brings Big Ideas And Deep Discussion

Block Talks allow for deep and detailed discussion while accommodating health directives for social distancing and small gatherings. On August 1st, community leaders from Southside Terrace and the Indian Hill neighborhood met with Canopy South and Omaha Housing Authority to walk and talk about the neighborhood. Gathering in the parking lot of the former YMCA at the corner of 30th and Q Streets, the group made their way along the 30th Street corridor to Upland Park.

Block Talk participants were asked to share what they valued most about the area, along with their desires for the future and immediate concerns. The group took frequent breaks, stopping to discuss challenge areas, sidewalk quality, potential development current vacant lots, and ways life could be improved in the immediate future.

After reaching the park and taking a break for lunch, attendees were asked to rank priorities noted during the walk. Improving safety and cleanliness were primary concerns. Residents expressed a strong desire for intentional community policing, investing in and beautifying community spaces, and the installation of trash and recycling receptacles throughout the corridor.

We learn by listening, and conversations like these lead to future opportunities to generate initiatives targeting neighborhood priorities.
